Everything You Need to Know About Hyaluronic Acid

A star of anti-aging skincare for several years, hyaluronic acid is renowned for its exceptional moisturizing and plumping properties.

Capable of retaining up to 1000 times its weight in water, it deeply moisturizes the skin, restores its volume, smooths wrinkles and fine lines, and even helps regulate sebum production.

A closer look at hyaluronic acid and its benefits:

I.          Hyaluronic acid

A.   HYALURONIC ACID: A NATURAL ALLY FOR THE SKIN

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule naturally present in the body, particularly in the skin, joints, and eyes. In the dermis, it plays an essential role by retaining water, allowing the skin to remain hydrated, supple, and plump. It supports connective tissue and collagen and elastin fibers, thus contributing to the density, firmness, and volume of the epidermis.

Thanks to its hygroscopic properties, it acts like a true natural sponge, filling the spaces between collagen and elastin fibers. It helps to hydrate, plump, and firm the skin while maintaining its elasticity.

With age, hyaluronic acid production gradually decreases, starting in your twenties, at a rate of approximately 10 to 12% per decade, leading to a loss of firmness, the appearance of the first wrinkles and fine lines, and a less radiant complexion. By around age 50, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin is thus reduced by half.

B.   A PRECIOUS MOLECULE IN COSMETIC CARE

To compensate for the natural decrease in hyaluronic acid with age, this active ingredient is widely used in cosmetic care. In the form of Sodium Hyaluronate, it is a viscous, transparent substance capable of retaining water and acting like a true sponge for the skin.

Depending on its size or molecular weight, its effects differ and target specific needs:

•    High molecular weight: this large molecule remains on the surface of the epidermis, creating a protective film that prevents water from evaporating. It moisturizes the superficial layers, provides a firming effect, softens wrinkles and fine lines, and maintains the skin's freshness and hydration.

•    Low molecular weight: smaller, this molecule penetrates deeply to the base of the stratum corneum. It revitalizes the epidermis, boosts the natural production of hyaluronic acid, and helps to regenerate the skin. The result: intense hydration and a more supple, plump, and firm skin.

Incorporated into serums, creams, or masks, hyaluronic acid provides targeted hydration tailored to the needs of each skin type. Whether it works on the surface or deeply, it remains an in alispensable ally for preserving the skin's volume, firmness, and youthfulness.
